200% Inspection. 0% Defects Reaching Your Customer.

A defect that makes it through production and reaches the end customer costs more than any inspection system ever would. Returns, complaints, reprints, and damaged relationships - all of it traces back to something that could have been caught on press.

The SMARTSCAN by Erhardt+Leimer is the first 200% inspection system developed specifically for narrow-web printing and finishing machines. It doesn't just check for print defects. It inspects the entire web - both front and back - simultaneously, catching what 100% inspection systems miss entirely.

Missing labels. Print defects. Color changes. Unremoved matrix. Splice points. Holes. Flags. Die cutting defects. Material damage. All of it detected, logged, and flagged before it becomes a customer problem.

Q360 Group supplies SMARTSCAN systems - new and used - and can help you identify the right configuration for your press or finishing line.

The Erhardt+Leimer SMARTSCAN

The 200% Concept: Most inspection systems use a single light source. SMARTSCAN uses two simultaneously - incident light and transmitted light - each producing its own image stream. Both streams are compared against a reference image (the golden template) and checked for defects in real time.

The result is 200% inspection coverage: incident light catches print defects, color changes, soiling, smears, splashes, and missing labels. Transmitted light catches what incident light can't see - unremoved matrix, die cutting position, splice points on the rear of the web, damage, holes, and flags. One system. Complete coverage.

One-Click Operation: Setup is two steps: teach in the reference image, start inspection. That's it. No external training required. No lengthy commissioning process. The system is ready to inspect with a single button press and integrates into standard printing and finishing machines without major modifications.

Inspection speeds up to 600 m/min. Web widths from 170mm to 550mm. Available in 2, 3, and 12 megapixel camera configurations depending on the resolution required for the application.

What SMARTSCAN Detects

Incident light detection - print defects, color changes, soiling, splashes and waste, smears, missing labels.

Transmitted light detection - unremoved matrix, die cutting position, splice points on the rear of the web, material damage, holes, flags.

Surface inspection - impurities, damage, holes, insects, and other material faults on unprinted homogeneous materials including paper and film.

Hole detection (pinhole module) - critical for food and pharmaceutical applications where 100% tightness is a requirement. The 200% technology detects pinholes through background lighting while still allowing print image inspection in the same pass.

SMARTSCAN UV - combines white light with UV lighting (365-370nm) to detect fluorescent colors, security elements, and design features not visible to the naked eye. Right for security label applications and UV adhesive inspection.

New Units and Used Systems - Both Available Through Q360

Q360 Group supplies SMARTSCAN systems new and can source used units for operations that want the capability at a lower entry cost. Whether you're equipping a new line or adding inspection to an existing press or rewinder, we'll help you find the right path.

If you're not sure which configuration fits your web width, substrate type, or application requirements, reach out and we'll work through it with you.

Not Sure What You Need?

Every press and finishing environment is different. Web width, substrate, speed, and the types of defects most critical to your operation all factor into the right SMARTSCAN configuration. Q360's team can help you work through the spec before you commit to anything.
